ACity Tech Expo 2026

There has been a surge in illegal mining activities, commonly referred to as “Galamsey” in Ghana over the years. These activities raise challenges related to the safety and integrity of our environment, due to the effects of the mining activities on our environment. There is the need to address issues related to water purity, land purity, forest safety, and many others.
Galamsey activities have caused damage to our environment. From water bodies, to the land, to the forests, the Effects of illegal mining cannot be undermined. Galamsey has led to pollution of our water bodies; both chemically and physically, ultimately aecting the health of citizens who happen to come into contact with it. Water polluted by Galamsey activities cause chronic diseases, and it has been projected that Ghana could be forced to import water by 2030. Galamsey has also led to land pollution and deforestation, a phenomenon that aects the production of food items such as cocoa; and the atmosphere and the weather conditions of the country. Failure to address these issues will lead to water scarcity, food insecurity, health problems within the citizenry, harsh and unpredictable weather conditions, among others.
This year’s Tech Expo aims to provide a platform for High School and University students to address the Effects of Galamsey and help eliminate, or at least reduce the Effects it has had on our environment. In the long run, our eorts aim to achieve Sustainable Development Goals 3, 6, 12, 13, 14, and 15 namely: “Good Health and Well-Being”, “Clean Water and Sanitation”, “Responsible Consumption and Production”, “Climate Action”, “Life Below Water”, and “Life on Land”.
  • Providing a platform for students to showcase their innovative technologies and solutions aimed at addressing key challenges in the environment caused by illegal mining activities.
  • Enabling High School and University students to join the fight against Galamsey by applying their knowledge and skills to solve the real world problems being faced as a result of Galamsey.
  • Facilitating viable networks and collaborations among students, industry professionals, government officials, and academia to foster interdisciplinary dialogue and collaboration.
  • Educating attendees and the general public about the importance of reversing environmental degradation and damage, and raising awareness about the potential impact of technology-driven solutions.
  • Inspiring creativity, innovation, and entrepreneurship by highlighting successful projects and initiatives, and encouraging students to provide solutions to national and environmental challenges.
  • Projecting, publicizing, and implementing student projects for the overall development of the country.

Participating students will be able to assess the various problems related to the Effects of Galamsey, gain hands-on experience in designing and implementing innovative technological solutions, form valuable connections with peers and industry professionals, and contribute to the collective eort aimed at restoring the environment and reversing all the damage that has been and is being done to the environment as a result of Galamsey, for a better Ghana.

The event is divided into three different major sections:

  • The University Exhibition Competition.
  • The High School Exhibition Competition.
  • The Homecoming: Celebrating 5 Years of Tech Expo

ACity Tech Expo 2025 Overview and Highlights

The Academic City Robotics Club organized the ACity Tech Expo 2025 to showcase the creativity, innovative thinking, and technological skill set of students of Academic City and other universities, as well as High School Students.

The theme for ACity Tech Expo 2025 was “Embracing Smart and Sustainable Cities Through Innovative Technologies”. Event

University Exhibition Challenge

In this challenge, university students showcased projects that implemented the use of technology and robotics-related concepts to solve problems faced in urban centers and embraced the idea of smart cities. These included ride hailing applications, smart energy monitoring and management systems, smart energy generators, and many others.

The purpose of the challenge was to provide an opportunity for students to enhance their problem-solving skills and knowledge in STEM, robotics, and engineering as well as open them up to current industry challenges faced in Ghana and some parts of the world. The challenge was open to ACity students as well as students of other universities.

The High School Exhibition Challenge

In this challenge, fresh young minds from high schools from various regions across the country had the opportunity to showcase innovative projects that also implemented the use of technology and robotics-related concepts to solve problems faced in urban centers and embraced the idea of smart cities. These included smart light control systems for homes, piezoelectric generators, and many others.

STEM Session with Firefly IO

This session featured a hands-on Robotics Workshop by Firefly IO using their Explore Bot. Participants engaged with hardware and software components, gaining valuable practical experience in robotics and automation. This session was instrumental in bridging the gap between theory and practice, allowing students to interact directly with cutting-edge technology.

  • Participants had the opportunity to display their projects and enhance their problem-solving skills.
  • The event served to impact over 100 participants as it provided the space for networking and sharing project ideas and knowledge.
  • Participants gained both technical and non-technical skills such as teamwork that they could implement in their future careers as well.
